 ABOUT THE TITLE
While there are those like Saadat Hasan Manto who for the most part depend on their own imagination to churn out literary masterpieces there are others like Rajendra Singh Bedi who take inspiration from happenings around them to do the same. While Manto excelled at writing on the spur of the moment Bedi preferred to take his time and give due respect to story-craft. It is pointless to bother about who is the superior of the two for both have produced quality in almost equal measure. In a letter addressed to Bedi Manto once wrote: ... The problem with you is that you think a bit too much. It appears that you think before writing while writing and even after you have finished writing a story. After a little while Bedi responded: Manto you seem to have a grave weakness ... You think neither before writing nor while writing and not even after you have finished writing a story. That settled the account between the two but for the readers they both remain icons in their own respective rights. The two letters quoted above were mentioned by Bedi himself during a lecture he delivered at the Jamia Millia in Delhi. The lecture in turn is part of this huge compilation of his work which includes 60 short stories his famed novel Aik Chadar Mailee Si 11 drama scripts 15 essays and some 30 odd letters to his contemporary Upendar Nath Ashk. Spread over one thousand and four hundred pages it is a volume that demands some physical exertion on the part of the reader. Perhaps the publishers would do well to divide it all into two volumes in the next edition to make it a bit more reader friendly. AUTHOR: RAJINDAR SINGH BEDI TAHQEEQ SALLAHUDIN MAHMOOD
